A group of 15 passionate Insulin Avengers, accompanied by two dedicated diabetes specialist nurses and two committed youth workers, embarked on an unforgettable journey to London to visit Parliament! During their visit, they had the incredible opportunity to meet two local politicians from neighbouring constituencies, engaging them in meaningful discussions about the pressing issues affecting their lives. With confidence and determination, they posed insightful questions on topics such as diabetes awareness in schools, access to insulin pumps and controllers, increased support for young people with diabetes, and the need for greater funding for the diabetes community. The experience didn’t stop there! They attended a 40-minute educational session on the inner workings of government and the role of Parliament, gaining a deeper understanding of how policies are made.
They were also privileged to sit in the House of Commons, witnessing a live debate on foreign affairs, and explored the prestigious House of Lords with an expert tour guide, who brought the history and significance of the Parliament building to life.
To top it all off, each participant was awarded the prestigious “Informed Citizen” badge, presented by the official Houses of Parliament tour guides. A testament to their commitment to learning and civic engagement. This was truly an incredible, eye-opening experience, empowering young people to become future leaders and change-makers in the diabetes community and beyond!
